Counseling 200A / Welcome to Laney College


Welcome and thank you for choosing Laney College!
If you’re a new student, you’ll be required to take Counseling 200A: Orientation to College.
Who Should Take This Course?
  • All students must take COUN 200A: Orientation to College (.5) (except if you have an A.A./A.S degree or higher).
  • COUN 200A will provide you with the information you need to pursue a degree or certificate and / or transfer to a four-year college or university


Why should you take COUN 200A?
  1. The state of California requires that every student receive an orientation to college.
  2. You’ll learn what you need to know to successfully accomplish your academic goals.
  3. You’ll learn about general education (GE), major requirements and types of degrees available.
  4. You’ll learn tips to successfully navigate the educational system from an experienced, knowledgeable Laney College counselor!
  5. Participants also receive a Laney College Student Planner.  Feel free to jump ahead and download a mini orientation guide now.


Important Steps to Prepare for 200A / Getting Started at Laney College
  1. Apply for Admission to Laney College.  Then look for an email confirmation with your Student ID number.
  2. Take Assessment tests.  To schedule an appointment call (510) 464-3259  or stop by  Building A, Room 101. Click here to see the current assessment schedule. You must have an appointment to take assessment.
  3. Complete Orientation
  4. Sign up for Counseling 200A where you’ll meet with a counselor to select your classes.
  5. Enroll in classes either online or in-person at the Welcome Center, A-101 or Admissions and Records, A-109.
  6. Pay your fees.  For information on applying for aid, visit the Laney College Financial Aid page.
  7. Buy your books.
