Oakland City Chorus
The Oakland City Chorus (at Laney College) is open to people of any age from the greater community. One need not be a full-time student to join. Enrollment in either Music 125, 128, or 225* and a placement audition are required (Syllabus Fall 2014). OCC performs a wide variety of repertoire including: Classical Music, World Music, and Spirituals. We have sung in Farsi, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Hindi, Latin, Luo, Mandarin, Mongolian, Swahili, Xhosa, and Zulu as well as modern European languages. Representative composers include: Bach, Bartók, Brahms, Britten, Emma Lou Diemer, Josquin des Prez, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Pauline Oliveras, Palestrina, Poulenc, Salamone Rossi, Stravinsky, John Tavener, and Vivaldi. OCC received 501 (c)(3) status in 2014.
Director John Reager holds two Master of Music degrees in Vocal Performance and Composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He studied conducting with David Conte, Anthony Pasqua, and Sonja Neblit. He was an AGMA tenor and soloist for eight seasons with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus and has directed numerous choirs. He is published by G.I.A. in Chicago.
