Laney Graduates Reaffirming Academic Dreams

These are fascinating and exhilarating times for the Class of 2010.

About 1,000 families and friends honored the Laney graduates at a festive commencement event at the historic Fox Theater recently.  More than 600 women and men received associate degrees in 44 disciples and certificates of competition in 35 professions.

Keynote speaker Paul Brest, president and acting director of the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, encouraged the Laney grads to “dream big” as they develop their future goals.

Reading from a Langston Hughes poem, Associated Students of Laney College President Ju Hong reminded us the power of dreams.  “Hold fast to your dreams.  Affirm and reaffirm your dreams,” he said.

In his address, Timothy Spengler described how the Career & Technical program played a pivotal role in his journey from a high-school-dropout to the 2010 Valedictorian.  “I believe that amazing things are possible,” Spengler added.

For 42 years, Ronald Moore has advised Peralta students on strategies to gain admission to four-year institutions as well as fulfill associate degree and certificate program requirements.  For his devotion to the students and commitment to the College, Mr. Moore was bestowed the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. This veteran counselor found his “greatest sense of fulfillment” in helping students actualize their dreams. …continue reading Eagle Flies: 2010 Commencement

Laney Unveils 2010 Educational Master Plan

Dear Friends:

It is with great pride and pleasure that I present to you our 2010 Laney College Educational Master Plan, a roadmap to guide our growth and development in the years ahead.

This document represents the tremendous vision, enthusiasm, and ability of Laney College. The Educational Master Plan was crafted with the full participation of the Laney community, from staff to students, from faculty to the surrounding community. Throughout the eight month planning process it took to produce the plan, I have been consistently humbled by the wisdom and attention to detail with which all involved approached this important task.

Reading this plan, you will soon see that the future of Laney College is bright. Each day, our campus community transforms lives, develops our regional workforce, and helps create healthy conditions for our community. In the years ahead, we will continue in that mission as we work to provide the exceptional academic experience our students deserve. You can look forward to new and expanded facilities, programs that address the changing needs of the economy and community, and expanded opportunities for professional development.

Eagle Express (March 2010)

March 30th, 2010

From the Office of Acting President Elñora Tena Webb

This has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, semesters I have ever experienced as an educator.

Just this month, hundreds of Laney students and employees spoke out against education budget cuts at rallies held in Oakland, San Francisco and Sacramento. In addition to the Spring 2010 cutbacks, Laney is anticipating further reductions of between 3 – 10% next fiscal year.  While the College continues to advocate for state/federal educational resources, Laney leaders are working diligently to optimize productivity, expand grant initiatives as well as explore contract education opportunities and fee-based offerings.
