Events for Fall 2009
Laney College Puente Program hosted a Mentor Student Event – Student Mentor Matching Luncheon on September 21, 2009, from 11:30 – 1:30 at 900 Fallon Street, room T 450. The event was the first event offered during the fall semester.
Our next event was held October 26, 2009, at this event students shared their posters from the “Who am I” assignment, a joint theme assignment for both English and Counseling classes, that was later displayed at Laney College Library.
The Puente Motivational Transfer Conference an annual event for the fall, took place this year at Cal State Sacramento – 900 Puentistas were there, the keynote speaker was Honorable Cruz Reynoso. Workshops, campus tour, breakfast and lunch as well as other activities were provided. The finale to the event was performance by students from eight colleges. Five of our Laney College Puente students performed with a dance that incorporated Capoeira which was well received, and one of the highlights for our Puente students.
We will be having our end of the semester event: a pot luck with everyone sharing a meal and conversations, on Sunday, December 13, 2009 in Castro Valley, at Loretta Hernandez’s home.
Puente students have been presenting on major of interest and on how to use the Kurzweil Program – Universal Learning system – Smartext Program offered at the DSP&S computer lab also available at F 170 lab. A program Stacey Kayden has been mainstreaming nationwide used by many students as one of the learning tools to add to their educational toolbox .
Puente students have also been meeting with their mentors and developing a stronger relationship where students learn the benefits of networking and access to their education and career posibilities available.
The events have been successful and participants have benefitted from the interactions and outcomes.
We thank everyone for the ongoing support provided to Puente students, faculty and program,
